Winter Walking in the Dolomites

Waymarked paths and unforgettable winter panoramas.
Best undertaken in and around Corvara and Pedraces.

For years people have come to the Dolomites to walk on the many marked paths, which meander at low, medium and high levels between the charming hamlets and villages of the South Tyrol. In summer, people are stopped in their tracks by the greens of lush pastures and woodland, not to mention the intense colours of flowerboxes and wildflower-strewn meadows.

Regardless of the magnificent scenery, your exhilaration will somehow take on an extra dimension...

And yet in winter, when the vivid colours are gone and the valleys succumb to the brilliant white of heavy snowfall, the effect is equally spellbinding. Another attraction for the winter walker is wildlife; here, it is not uncommon to see arctic hares, chamois, golden eagles and silver foxes.

But whatever the seasonal changes, it is the ever-present Dolomites, looming large above the charming valleys, which make it such a paradise for walkers in both winter and summer. Furthermore, this unique combination of the 'enchanting' and the ‘awe-inspiring' can be admired from all walking routes, whether meandering along the valley bottom or snowshoeing under the vertical walls of the massifs on upland trails that contour the valley.

These walks are magical and will, at times, lead you to remote and completely silent parts of the valley. Regardless of the magnificent scenery, your exhilaration will somehow take on an extra dimension when you are out in the winter air, wrapped up warm with fresh snow underfoot and all around you, perhaps with a flask and a packed lunch in your rucksack or on your way to a mountain hut, where hot soup and more awaits. It is not surprising then that winter walking has always been popular amongst the local people and it is often their footsteps you end up following after fresh snow has fallen!

'Young, jagged and imposing, the Dolomites are perhaps the most striking mountains in Europe. Although they are a stunning location for summer hiking, they are at their most sublime in winter. Stepping into a pair of snowshoes might feel strange at first, but it will allow you to walk to parts of this snowbound wonderland that are normally reserved for mountaineers and extreme skiers.'
