All You Need to Know About Switzerland's Mountain Pass

025-Walking-Holidays-Swiss-Alps-3.jpg

All of our self-guided walking holidays to the Swiss Alps include a free Mountain Pass. This Mountain Pass provides you with access to all transport, including local buses, 13 panoramic cable cars and iconic mountain trains. This even includes the renowned glacier experience on the UNESCO Bernina Express.

Here are some of our favourite ways to use the Mountain Pass to explore the Engadin Valley.

Using Your Mountain Pass for the Famous Muottas Muragl

One of our favourite hikes, which takes advantage of the Mountain Pass, starts at a funicular called Muottas Muragl. This small train ascends the mountainside giving you significant height gain without any effort.

Once at the top, spectacular views of the valley await you, including the glamorous town of St Moritz. It’s a wonderful place to sit and have a drink whilst enjoying one of the best views in the Engadine. Sitting in front of panoramas like these are moments to savour.

Walks from Muottas Muagl

Switzerland Mountain pass

There are a few walk options from this location, which suit a variety of fitness levels. The popular panorama walk  meanders along the hillside and regularly offers sightings of the elusive ibex.

If you prefer a trail further away from the crowds, head towards the Segantini hut. It’s a delightful coffee stop that has stunning views towards to the Roseg Valley. Further along the path, you’ll get fantastic views across to the Bernina Massif (the biggest range in the Eastern Alps) as well as the Moteratsch glacier. Drink it in peace (apart from the occasional cowbell perhaps?!) whilst breathing in the purest alpine air.

At the end of the walk, a short chairlift – included in your Mountain Pass – lowers you into the town of Pontresina, a vibrant and pretty resort in a stunning mountain location. This is a lovely place to do a little shopping, grab a drink and wind down after a great day out.

The Furtschellas Gondola & Piz Chuern

Another wonderful use of your Mountain Pass is heading up with the Furtschellas gondola. The cable car takes you over the blue lakes of the Upper Engadin, providing you with some of the best views the Swiss Alps have to offer.

From the top station of Furtschellas gondola, you can head on a  wonderful walk around the high alpine area to the summit of Piz Chuern (2684m). You’ll be climbing, traversing and descending through some of the most mindboggling scenery the Engadin has to offer. Look out for Edelweiss, Switzerland’s national flower, as you criss-cross streams on your descent through the Val Fex.

Surlej Balcony

If you’re seeking a bit of a challenge, the Surlej Balcony walk might be the perfect fit. This magnificent route unfolds above Lake Silvaplana and Sils, where you will surely be awe-inspired by what you see.

At the end of your walk you can use your Mountain pass once more to ascent to the highest cable car point (3,303m). From here you get a close-up of the Corvatsch glacier and on a clear day. If you’re lucky and have good visibility, you can even see the Matterhorn!
