The best months to hike in Switzerland
Switzerland is a hiker’s paradise, with its picture-postcard peaks, tranquil valleys, and crystal-clear lakes. But what are the best months to hike in Switzerland? After planning walking holidays to the Swiss Alps for many years, we believe the answer is somewhere in between the heart of summer and early autumn – depending on the type of holiday you’re seeking. From July to September, the country unveils its most breathtaking trails, welcoming adventurers with favourable weather and stunning landscapes.
In this blog, we’ll explore why these months are ideal for hiking and answer key questions to help you plan your Swiss hiking holiday.
Hiking in Switzerland in July
July marks the true beginning of the hiking season in Switzerland. As summer sets in, the snow melts away from most trails, even at higher altitudes, making them accessible to hikers. The weather in July is generally warm, with average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, ideal for a long day of trekking.
Benefits of Hiking in Switzerland in July:
- Accessibility: Almost all hiking trails, including high-altitude routes, are open and safe to explore. This of course depends on the specific climate from year-to-year, but typically this is when the area comes alive to walkers.
- Flora and Fauna: July is the peak time for wildflowers in the Swiss Alps. Meadows burst into color with vibrant blooms, turning mountain slope into a colourful palette. Wildlife is abundant, with a good chance to observe marmots and chamois, which live in the high meadows.
- Extended Daylight: With long days and short nights, you have more daylight hours to explore the trails, allowing for more flexible and extended hiking schedules, perfect for those who like to be in the outdoors for as long as possible.
However, July is also a popular month for tourists, meaning some trails can be crowded in the busier parts of Switzerland. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider starting your hikes early in the morning or exploring less-known routes. Our walking holidays in the Swiss Alps are based in the beautiful Engadin valley, also known as ‘Switzerland’s Quiet Corner’. So, you can expect less busy trails even in July. Hiking in Switzerland in August
August continues the prime hiking season in Switzerland, offering similar conditions to July but with some subtle differences. The weather remains warm, and the trails are in their best condition. August is also a popular month for festivals and local events, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to your walking holiday.
Benefits of Hiking in Switzerland in August:
- Stable Weather: August typically offers stable weather, with less chance of rain and thunderstorms, making it a reliable month for outdoor activities. Temperatures can reach highs of 32°C during the day, which isn’t quite right for some walkers and will require the right gear and plenty of sunscreen. Walking on some of the higher passes do tend to be cooler, however.
- Festivals and Events: The Engadin Festival is one of the oldest and most popular events in the region. Founded in 1941, the festival offers two summer weeks full of exceptional classical concerts in local churches and hotels. This makes August an ideal time for those that want to combine great walking while enjoying the local culture.
- Alpine Lakes: By August, the snow has completely melted, making the mountain lakes more accessible for a refreshing dip during, or after a day’s hike. This is such a refreshing was to cool down if the temperaturesget toohigh, and the water is some of the clearest you’ll ever see.
While the weather is favourable, August is the peak of the tourist season, meaning accommodations and popular trails & resports may be busier. As opposed to popular places such as Bernese Oberland, our base in the Engadin Valley is where the Swiss tend to head on a walking holiday. So, if you’re after a truly authentic Swiss walking holiday experience, make sure to add Engadin Valley to your list.
If you prefer an even quieter hiking experience, we’d recommend booking your walking holiday towards late August or September.
Hiking in Switzerland in September
The beginning of September is a wonderful time to hike in Switzerland. As summer transitions into autumn, the landscapes begin to change colour, offering a stunning backdrop for your hikes. In the Engadin valley, temperatures drop slightly, ranging from 15°C to 20°C, making it comfortable for long-distance treks.
Benefits of Hiking in Switzerland in September:
- Fewer Crowds: As the peak tourist season comes to an end, trails become less crowded, providing a more serene hiking experience, ideal for those who like peace and tranquility whilst walking.
- Autumn Colors: The beginning of the autumn season brings rich, warm colours to the forests of the Engadin valley, creating picturesque scenes that are perfect for practicing your mountain photography. The vibrancy of colours can vary depending on the specific climate.
- Ideal Weather: Cooler temperatures and stable weather patterns make September perfect for long-distance hikes. Alternatively, why not head to St Moritz for a day of city explorations?

Which Month is the Most Beautiful in Switzerland?
As with everything, beauty is subjective. July and August are fantastic months to explore the high-level mountain treks of the Swiss Alps whilst they’re covered in wildflowers. You can expect it to be busier on the trails and in the towns. However, this might not be a bad thing if you’d like to fully immerse yourself in the vibrant Swiss culture.
Late August and early September is a fantastic time to visit the Engadin valley if you prefer tranquility and slightly cooler temperatures. The autumn colours begin to take over the landscape, with golden larches and red-tinged leaves contrasting against the majestic peaks. The lower tourist numbers also allow you to enjoy the natural beauty in a more peaceful setting.
