A walk in the mountains does not always have to be a demanding physical adventure. This is why, on a centre-based Collett’s mountain holiday, we place as much emphasis on easy and idyllic walks, as we do on intermediate hikes and challenging treks. Here's our guide on the best walking for beginners in Austria.

Our walking holidays in Austria are based in a spectacular area known as the Zugspitz Arena. Lying between Innsbruck and Garmisch, this is where the Tyrol meets Bavaria. Indeed, the border of Austria and Germany dissects the Zugspitze (2962m), the mountain that dominates many of the walks we have waiting for you if you should visit this alpine gem.

So, as you embark on your Austrian Alps walking holiday research, be sure to take a look at our Austro-Bavarian gem, as over the years, our dedicated Walks Team (on-the-ground to help you choose the most appropriate walks for your level of fitness from your own Collett’s Walk Pack) have watched many guests thrive on a fabulous selection of walks, which we categorise as ‘Easy & Idyllic.’

At 2962m, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain and Austria’s 14th. Its northern face dominates the vibrant Bavarian resort of Garmisch (good for a day trip if you take a rest day during your stay), whilst on its southern (or Austrian) side, described by locals as the sunny side, it converges with other prominent massifs to form a remarkable natural bowl known as the Zugspitz Arena.

Lying amidst lush and pretty alpine meadows in the middle of this natural splendour is Ehrwald, the base for our popular centre-based walking holidays in the Austrian Alps. Ehrwald is a picture-postcard Tyrolean village with startling views in every direction. With many walks of all grades, from easy lakeside strolls, to challenging treks on exposed ridges, it is a classic alpine gem for walking holidays in Europe’s most mountainous country. This includes some perfect days out for beginners and leisurely strollers.

In its spectacular setting, Ehrwald’s location is as majestic as any village in the Alps. Our closest peak is the Sonnenspitze (2417m), which gives its name to our base in the charming village centre, fabulous Hotel Sonnenspitze.

Waymarked paths radiate from the village in all directions and are soon populated by walkers as they emerge from their homes, hotels, guest houses or self-catering apartments to marvel at flora, fauna, and alpine scenery at its best. Meanwhile, free local buses ferry other walkers to equally enchanting neighbouring villages to the starting points of their chosen walks.

Moderate Walks in the Austrian Alps

There are countless easy and moderate walks here. I mention moderate walks, because  some of our easier moderate classics are often enticing to beginners, who want to push themselves and maybe get a glimpse of terrain that is considered a little more challenging. Either way, we have enchanting walks on tracks that traverse the flower meadows that stretch out towards Lermoos and Biberwier, which share the Zugspitz Arena with Ehrwald. For a sensational view of Ehrwald, head for the Wolfrathauser Hütte (see the picture!). There are also classic strolls on the banks of the River Loisach, which descends to Garmisch before eventually spilling out into the Danube.

You can also wander to the waterfall on the Rundwasserfall weg, or along the old mill path, flanked by the crystal-clear waters of the River Gaisbach and vivid flower pastures. On the Partnach Klamm, our easiest stroll, the River Partnach plummets spectacularly from the Zugspitze glacier into a ravine, forming a memorable backdrop. High above Ehrwald, the glacial lakes of Seebensee and Drachensee send icy water crashing to the valley. Indeed, dramatic waterfalls are a feature of our easier walks. There are also some impressive gorges, notably in the Wetterstein group, which provides a variety of absorbing leisurely strolls. Easy tracks circumnavigate many local lakes, which are perfect for picnics and swimming.

Walking infrastructure in the Austrian Alps

Signposting – or waymarking – on all of our routes is clear and efficient in this alpine region. Moreover, our walks never divert from recognised trails. Many signs feature walking times and distances to key intersections and mountain huts, known here as Alms, where well-earned food and drink can be enjoyed, usually on a sun terrace with a glorious view.

The Zugspitz Arena has been welcoming walkers to the Tyrol for years and, wherever you choose to explore, you will notice that the whole area is set up to deliver happy and successful walking holidays, whether that be the local bus system, chairlifts, cable cars, waymarking, path maintenance, walking maps, and indeed the mountain huts, which are a heart-warming feature of a walker’s day out in the mountains.

What is the best base for hiking in Austria?

erhwald-zugspitze-arena

In my opinion you can’t beat Ehrwald, although Lermoos would be a close second. Dominated by its onion-domed church, Ehrwald is surrounded by rich floral meadows, all of them towered over by a seemingly unending rim of awesome mountains. It is also the arena’s main village and boasts an attractive selection of cafes, bars, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. It is unquestionably an outstanding launchpad for an Austrian walking holiday and this is why Collett’s decided to base itself at the heart of the village at Hotel Sonnenspitze.

Ehrwald is effectively the beating heart of the Zugspitz Arena. It is the main hub for a brilliant local bus service that caters for walkers, along with its 2 cable cars, which offer access to glorious vantage points and sensational walking options. Ehrwald also has a railway station, making it accessible without having to self-drive or hire a car. Munich Airport is just 2hrs by train from the village.

In the village, there are also multiple suppliers of other alpine pursuits, should you fancy the occasional rest from your walks. It has an attractive indoor swimming pool with an open-air sun terrace, (although many people prefer to swim in the colder water of the mountain lakes!) There are trails for e-bikers and mountain bikers (with multiple bike rental outlets) and we can help you partake in tennis, golf, hang-gliding, rafting, canoeing, canyoning, sport climbing, indoor climbing and summer tobogganing. For a proper rest day, why not take a boat ride on one of the larger mountain lakes?

Whatever you choose to do in Ehrwald, we want every Collett’s walking holiday to get off to a smooth and hassle-free start. That’s why there’s lots about Ehrwald in our Holiday Handbook, as well as all the relevant information on finding (and navigating) your chosen walks – and much more besides. The handbook is part of your Walk Pack and, along with our welcoming and knowledgeable Walks Team, it will ensure you have a string of memorable walks that suit your fitness level, whilst giving you a stunning introduction to the potential of walking as a holiday pastime. In addition, you receive an online version of the handbook a few weeks before your holiday, and the section entitled Our Easy & Idyllic Walks will surely whet the appetite.
